It was a beautiful evening. The rain had stopped and everything looked washed and fresh like new and glistened in the rays of sun. The bright round sun was ready to go down the western slope but the beauty of a magical seven colored bow like thing was mesmerising. It looked so beautiful that the sun stopped to admire it and was standstill for a while. The same was the condition of the birds big and small and Bunny the rabbit and Anna the fat squirrel and Putsy the pig and Mike the horse and Dixy, Pixy, Pinky and Sweetie sheep — everyone that lived in that barn. Before the coming up of the seven colored bow in the sky they all had watched with great wonder and fascination a little golden haired boy lying on his tummy on a fluffy, fleecy big chunk of white cloud that looked exactly like cotton candy. Since they could not reach the cloud they were a little jealous of the boy. Everybody except Mike the horse, wanted to play with the boy on the clouds. And now this seven colored bow like thing was up there. It was much better than the cloud. Cloud was always white so looked very dull. i Moreover it was always floating this side or that side in the direction of the wind. Suppose it clashes with the tree or the electric pole that sheds bright light in the barn? Oh no !! They loved the bow like thing also because it was firm and both it’s ends touched the small brown hill beyond the barn. They called it rainbow because it had come up on the sky after rains.
Now they got excited because they were planning to go up the rainbow so that they can sit on it like they sit on the swing. All the baby birds flew and sat on the rainbow. Their faces were glowing with happiness. The big birds were tempted too. But some had little babies to look after. They wrapped the babies in soft blankets and kept them into the cane basket and flew with the baskets. One bird had just laid eggs and she did not want to leave the three eggs unattended so she took the whole nest with her. The black crow whom nobody liked and called him Blackie also wanted to sit there but when he sat there with a thud some of the chips of the rainbow fell on the ground. Everybody gave a nasty look but Blackie gave them a crooked smile. He was happy he could sit on the rainbow. Anna the fat squirrel and Bunny the rabbit were trying to climb the rainbow from the hill side. Only Mike the horse and and Putsy the pig could not make it because they were very heavy. And Dixy, Pixy, Pinky and Sweetie the four friends were anyway never interested in any activity except grazing the soft grass. They were always hungry.
From up there the barn looked very beautiful. It was so so green. Everybody in the barn adored the big hugh tree in the middle. It gave all of them tasty fruits and shade from sun and rain. All the birds big and small had their home on one or the other branch of the tree. Anna and Bunny lived in holes near the big trunk. Mike and Putsy were always standing near the tree in the night. And you know the tree brought them all together so that they were like a family now.
The sun had gone down. It was not very dark but the day light was gradually getting dim and then T H U D …….. The rainbow suddenly crumbled into small grains and disappeared. There was chaos. The bird who had brought her eggs in the nest was helped by a big bird and the three eggs were saved, so were the tiny baby birds inside the cane basket. Some fell in the accident and were wounded. The rest flew away from there. Anna and Bunny got badly hurt because they fell on the rocks. Mike was sorry for them but nobody liked his mischievous smile . Bunny asked “Did you know about the accident?” He said, “The rainbow appears in the sky after rain when the sun is there. In the absence of the sunlight it vanishes.” They all shouted “Why you did not tell us ?” The wise Mike said, “You never asked me before going.”
