This is the story of Shane when he was seven years old. He was very fair with golden, curly, long hair and blue eyes . His mouth was round and when he gave that naughty smile everybody fell in love with him . The one sleeve of his shirt was nicely done but the other sleeve was always unbuttoned and loose and hanging. And the laces of shoes were never never tied properly. He once fell down because of his shoe – laces and his hands were badly bruised and he had to his doctor but the next day the shoe laces were again hanging loose. And you know he always wanted to have fun and wanted to scare his friends and specially that pretty girl Nishi with a pony tail done nicely and decorated with fancy clips by her mother. Shane in his pocke kept either a frog or a butterfly or a beetle or any other insect he found on his way to school. And on the way if it had rained and if he saw a small puddle on the road, he would never avoid it but would jump over it. It delighted him to see the water also jumping with him and anybody passing from that side getting drenched too like him. At home when mommy asked about it, the ready made answer was, “Oh a car passed that way making me drenched.” In his school bag there were few books but more pebbles and stones . Most often his home work was incomplete. But in class he was very alert and gave correct answers of all the problems. He was very intelligent. His teachers instead of scolding him always loved him.
That day it was all grey and misty. There was a little chill in the wind. Shane was on his way to school but he was depressed and not his usual self — he was not jumping or talking or teasing anybody. He saw his three friends walking ahead of him. He knew them. One was Nate. He was a big boy and the class leader. He was kind to everybody but all the students were afraid of him because teachers asked him about everything that happened in the class. Everybody wanted to keep him in good humour and to keep him pleased. When Shane saw him he took out his catapult, kept a stone in it and aimed at Nate’s back. Suddenly Nate looked back and the stone hit him on the eye. A streak of red blood came out on his face and he fell on the ground. Shane was shocked. He never wanted to hurt him. He only aimed at his back and the thick coat would have saved him from any accident. He ran for his help but other two boys who were with Nate and saw the stone thrown by Shane, were very angry with him.
Luckily Miss. Michelle was also going to school. She immediately phoned to the school, an ambulance came and took Nate to the hospital.
Shane was very sad. It was only an accident. His intention was not to harm his friend. But nobody was ready to believe him. He went with his mother to see Nate in the hospital. When he saw him with a big bandage all over his head he began to cry. Big tears were rolling down his eyes. Nate heard him sob and he said ,” Why are you weeping. It was not your fault. You did not know that I was going to move. How can you hit me, you are my friend.” All the burden slipped off Shane’s head.
The next day doctor opened the bandage. There was no problem with Nate’s eye. There was only a mark above the eyes and doctor said it would go with time. Nate laughingly said this was a mark of his friendship with Shane.
Shane now was very careful and kind, and very caring with all his friends. Nishi now was his best friend and they shared their tiffin with each other everyday.
