Banaras Hindu University
Vishwanath temple, the favorite abode of Lord Shiva and the sacred, northflowing river Ganga -- make one of the oldest living cities Varanasi a uniquely vibrant place in the world. Banaras Hindu University adds a different flavor of new knowledge to this ancient city and makes it magical. The name “City Of Light” given to Varanasi thus becomes relevant because it becomes the city of spiritual illumination as well as the enlightenment of knowledge.
Banaras Hindu University is the physical manifestation of a dream of visionary Pt Madan Mohan Malviya, which took concrete shape from the money offered as alms to its founder. Spread over an area of 15sq km. In a semi-circular pattern, this lush green residential university has three Institutes –IIT, IMS, IAS - 14 Faculties and 124 independent teaching departments - many of them recognized as centers of excellence, one college for women, a modern central library, one famous hospital, one temple-- all enshrined in majestic buildings glorifying a planned township. Wandering around along the roads under the huge trees with the sun-rays filtering through their thick leaves and radiating your being, is an experience that haunts teachers and students of BHU when they have left it.
It was my destiny to be a part of this renowned university as a Ph.D.student and later on as a teacher in the Dept of English for nearly 38 years.
Everything I learnt in these formative years has gone into the making of
what I am today. My stars helped me to make this Taposthali of Malviyaji my Karmsthali and today I feel blessed and amply rewarded!!!
