Emptiness emptying
Itself
In my sinking heart
and claiming
my emptiness.
Hollow moments
encircle
my hollow being
making me look
like a fused tube
with black light.
Not that I loved
you too much
But now
I do not know
what to do
With
Out
You
Shanta Dutta Roy says
Both “Without you” and “Sati”,deal with the pain of being left alone after the death of the husband. The beauty of the poems is enhanced by the way Dr. Nigam plays with the structure of the poems.
The feeling of a vacuum within and without, is poignantly brought out by some one-word lines.
In “Sati”, the narrator trashes the myth that the custom of Sati is abolished. The widow may not be dying with the husband in the physical form, but in her daily life, she is burning, dying. Time drags…as if the husband ensures, the flame from the pyre consumes her very being even when he is not there and she does not entertain any desires and longings.
A telling comment on the condition of women and the society even today.
